The visuals showed, huge plumes of ash and smoke filmed erupting from Mount Etna, Sicily, as skiers used the slopes below, reports Euro News.
Scientists at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia informed that volcanic activity at the site, which frequently erupts, had intensified, with craters continuously emitting ash.
In response to the volcanic activity, scientists issued a red Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation, its highest level, though authorities informed flights would continue to operate normally at a nearby airport unless ashfall increased.
The eruptions, visible even from nearby ski slopes, have given tourists and locals a rare nighttime display and left them surprised.
As reported by media, at 12:45 a.m. (local time) on Saturday, a 2.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Etna area at a depth of 32 kilometers, marking another sign of the volcano’s restless state.
Experts say this phase of activity is not unusual for Etna and remains under close observation.
According to local media, no casualties or injuries were reported after the volcanic activity, as the situation is under control now, and skiers enjoyed witnessing the mesmerizing, breathtaking view at Mount Etna, recorded as a dreamy scenic beauty in the sky.
The highest active volcano in Europe has occurred on the Italian island of Sicily. During the peak of activity, lava fountains reached heights of up to 300–400 meters, while a column of ash rose several kilometers into the sky.
The ash spread westward and southwestward, falling on a number of populated areas.
Due to the volcanic activity, the local civil protection department declared a “yellow” alert level while the situation is under control now.
