Tate McRae has pulled back the curtain on just how heavy fame has felt in the past year.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the singer, who recently parted ways with The Kid Laroi, admitted that the intense surge of attention following their breakup took a frightening toll on her mental well-being.
“It was really scary and overwhelming,” she confessed, revealing that she never anticipated how invasive public curiosity would feel.
“I would never talk that way, even about my friends' lives. I didn't realise how much it would affect me, the public knowing my private life — because no one knows the full story of anything, ever.”
McRae went on to speak about how misconceptions can easily spiral, and how both she and her ex channeled their emotions into their music.
“I also hate people painting a situation that's worse than it is. But what I've had to realise is that he's going to write songs and I'm going to write songs, and that's our way of expressing ourselves. That's our art, that’s our job. And once it's out there, it's not mine anymore.”
Reflecting on how fame has reshaped her life over the past year, McRae said the emotional weight has been transformative.
“I don't even recognise that person. I feel I've aged 10 years in the past year,” she concluded.
