The move comes after '28 Years Later' received a warm reception from fans
Fans' warm reactions to 28 Years Later, a sequel released after nearly two decades, are now set to get a third installment, which will reportedly star Cillian Murphy.
According to Deadline, Sony has greenlit the project after the 2025 apocalyptic movie, directed by Nia DaCosta, performed well at the box office, raking in $151 million worldwide.
For the third installment, the studio has screenwriter Alex Garland readying the script, while the Oppenheimer actor, who is a veteran of the zombie horror franchise as Jim, is in talks to return.
Directed by Danny Boyle, the franchise's first movie, titled 28 Days Later, arrived in 2001. It was a hit at the box office; made on a budget of $8 million, it has grossed over $72 million globally.
On the other hand, Cillian will have a limited role in the forthcoming movie 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The movie will hit cinemas on Jan 16, 2026.
It is worth noting that 28 Days Later was first released in 2002, followed by 28 Weeks Later in 2007.
Then the franchise was revived with 28 Years Later in 2025, and the upcoming sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and an untitled third film, which will complete the trilogy.
