China-led scientists unveil AI model to analyze ocean depths
Deep-sea research strives for a more interpretable and predictable approach
A joint collaboration led by Chinese scientists has launched a new deep-sea exploration AI model named DePTH-GPT to advance global understanding of ocean research.
The model primarily utilizes AI technologies like deep learning, large language models, computer vision to process data from sources such as video footage, hydrodynamics, and bioacoustics, aiming for a more intelligent and predictive stage.
The AI model has already developed an intelligent cognitive system for a deep-sea seamount and a hydrothermal vent, in collaboration with the Second Institute of Oceanography under the Ministry of Natural Resources.
DePTH-GPT is the end result of the Digital DEPTH project which primarily focuses on deep-sea habitats and was launched under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
The model will be available to global research institutions and will transform deep-sea research from its current state of conventional qualitative analysis to a highly intelligent, predictive stage that encompasses distinct deep-sea habitats, like seamounts.
