Jacob Elordi and Guillermo del Toro details the intense practice for The Creature’s voice
Jacob Elordi, who played The Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, opened up about how he mastered the vocals rough gravel accent of it.
The Euphoria star in an interview with the Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast, discussed the trials and errors of finding the very specific sound.
The Australian actor shared that the process was back and forth as "while we were filming, [Guillermo would] come back from the edit the next morning and he'd say to me, 'There's a gravel that needs to be there,' because I was developing with the Creature as the Creature developed in the film."
He added, "I was lucky enough to, for the most part, shoot it in something of a chronological order. So I got to develop the voice as I played it live."
Elordi went on to explain a specific kind of throat chant, called Tibetan throat chant, that he would practice and work on.
However, he further clarified that change in vocals were "depending on the physicality of the scene or how he's being treated in the moment affects the way his voice works."
The 28-year-old star also said that true emotional depth in performance didn’t just come from a "growl" but also it came from channelling "every incision, every memory, every different bit of flesh, every life lived — you have to build something that sounds like that."
In addition to Elordi, Oscar Isaac started as Victor Frankenstein, the egotistical scientist who decides to defy the nature by creating a human on his own that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
The film is now streaming on Netflix.
