OpenAI locks $38bn cloud computing deal with Amazon

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI locked a multi-layer strategic partnership deal on Monday, November 3, 2025.

The AI chatbot company, OpenAI, has signed a $38 billion deal with Amazon to use its cloud computing infrastructure as part of a more than $1 1trillion spending spree on computing power.

A new multi-layer strategic partnership will enable OpenAI to run its advanced AI workloads on AWS's world-class infrastructure.

The new agreement with Amazon Web Services means OpenAI will be able to access AWS data centres to operate its AI products.

Previously, ChatGPT's owner, Sam Altman, signed deals worth more than $1 trillion with Oracle, Broadcom, AMD, and chip-making giant Nvidia.

As part of the new $38 bn agreement expected to grow over the 7 years, OpenAI will gain access to NVIDIA processors to train its AI models.

According to OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, "Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute."

Altman believes this new partnership with Amazon Web Services AWS will strengthen the broad compute ecosystem that will empower the next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.

The new agreement reveals that the American multinational technology company AWS will provide OpenAI with Amazon EC2 Ultra Servers, featuring hundreds of thousands of chips and the ability to scale tens of millions of CPUs for advanced AI workloads.

According to Amazon, as frontier model providers seek to push their models to new heights of intelligence, they are increasingly turning to AWS for the performance, scale, and security it enables.

"As OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of what's possible, AWS's best-in-class infrastructure will serve as a backbone for their AI ambitions," said Matt Garman, CEO of AWS.

Additionally, OpenAI will immediately begin using AWS compute before the end of 2026, with the ability to expand further into 2027 and beyond.

The announcement came less than a week after Amazon laid off 14,000 people.
