Prince William releases emotional video after heartbreaking update
The Prince of Wales, set to visit Rio de Janeiro this week, receives shocking update from Brazil
Prince William has received shocking updates from Brazil days before his visit to Rio de Janeiro, where he will present awards during the Earthshot Prize ceremony.
Over a hundred people have been killed as police conducted gang raids in Brazil just days before William and Sir Keir Starmer's arrival in the country, according to reports.
The town was presenting a horrific situation as streets were on fire and bodies were bundled into vehicles. More than 40 dead bodies were laid out on a street after 132 people were killed, including four police officers as 2,500 armed officers descended on Rio de Janeiro.
It comes amid reports that the Prince of Wales is all excited to fly over to Rio de Janeiro next week. The British future monarch, alongside a prize council, will announce five winners for the Earthshot Prize, which awards innovative projects £1million each to combat critical environmental issues.
Amid chaotic situation in Brazil, William has shared an emotional video on his and Princess Kate's official Instagram account.
The video was accompanied by a lengthy note: "To create a thriving planet for all, we need to reverse the trend of biodiversity loss by finding new ways to halt damage and actively restore natural habitats. That’s what The Earthshot Prize to Protect & Restore Nature is all about.
Brazilian native Gisele Bundchen will serve on the prize council alongside national treasure Sir David Attenborough.
CEO of the Earthshot Prize Jason Knauf said: "The partnership with the Eleven Eleven Foundation to transform Rio into the Earthshot City is more than a collaboration, it's a call to urgent optimism, uniting bold climate leaders and communities to face a powerful opportunity to spark bold dialogues and real climate action.
"From London to Cape Town, the Earthshot Prize has spotlighted ambitious climate leaders. Now, it arrives in a country full of creativity and urgency, inviting us all to explore, be inspired, and act."
William will head to the COP30 summit in Belem, Brazil, following the event on November 6. He will be joined by Sir Keir at the venue.
The yearly conferences unite countries that have signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to coordinate responses to global warming.
Will Princess Kate accompany Prince William to Brazil?
The royal family's real jewel Princess Kate will not accompany William at the Earthshot Prize ceremony.
She will remain in Britain to give a final push to their preparations regarding the family's move from Adelaide Cottage to the nearby Forest Lodge.
Kate previously attended the first two awards ceremonies for the Earthshot Prize, joining her husband for the event in London in 2021 and Boston in 2022.
She did not join William in 2023, as she stayed home to support her eldest son Prince George, who had exams that week. Kate also missed last year's ceremony in South Africa, spending most of the year out of the public eye amid her cancer diagnosis and treatment.
