ChatGPT gets first payments wallet after PayPal-OpenAI deal, stock soars
PayPal, OpenAI landmark deal sends the finance company up 13% in premarket trading
PayPal has entered a deal with OpenAI where the ChatGPT users will have their own digital wallet embedded in the chatbot.
The integration of PayPal will allow the users to pay for items that they purchase through AI tools.
Under the agreement framework, the seamless merger of PayPal’s ecosystem in ChatGPT will take place in 2026.
According to PayPal CEO Alex Chriss, besides purchasing, the merchants can sell their inventory listed on AI bot.
While talking in an interview, Chris said, “We’ve got hundreds of millions of loyal PayPal wallet holders who now will be able to click the ‘Buy with PayPal button’ on ChatGPT and have a safe and secure checkout experience.”
Following the landmark deal, PayPal stocks surge 13 percent in premarket trading as reported by Reuters.
The collaboration will be a significant part of OpenAI’s efforts to expand ChatGPT’s e-commerce usage. In the AI-driven era, generative AI shopping tools are bringing a paradigm shift in online retail.
Two weeks earlier, OpenAI also announced e-commerce deal with Walmart
Last month, OpenAI allowed their users to make a purchase from Etsy and Shopify merchants.
In the era of agentic AI shopping, PayPal is trying to position itself as a backbone for AI-driven payments.
"By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps for our joint customer bases," Chriss said in a statement.
