Guillermo del Toro brutally weighed in the use of Artificial Intelligence in the field of directing and producing films.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker shared his concerns on the increasing usage of the technology by comparing it with his film Frankenstein lead character, Victor (Oscar Isaac).
During an interview with NPR magazine, the Pan’s Labyrinth director said, "AI, particularly generative AI — I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested. I’m 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak."
He went on share that few days ago he received an email from someone asking about his "stance on AI" to which Guillermo replied, "I'd rather die."
Guillermo further explained that the controversial technology itself is not dangerous, however the "natural stupidity" could drive the mishandling of it.
He went to compare the "arrogance" of Victor Frankenstein with the contributors of AI development, explaining, "[Victor] is kind of blind, creating something without considering the consequences and I think we have to take a pause and consider where we’re going."
Adapted from Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel of the same name, follows a brilliant and egotistical scientist Victor, who defies the laws of nature and tries to play god by bringing a monstrous creature to life that ultimately leads to tragic undoing of both the creator and creation.
Frankenstein is set to premiere on Netflix on November 7.
