Macaulay Culkin recalls how John Candy saved him from his abusive father
‘Home Alone’ star notes his father was jealous of his popularity
Macaulay Culkin has revealed how late comic John Candy salvaged him from his “real-life monster” father Kit Culkin.
The former child star recalled in a recent interview that John reportedly worked with nine-year-old Macaulay in 1989's Uncle Buck where he realised that the young boy’s dad was a nuisance.
“I think he [Candy] always had that really great instinct,” said the 45-year-old, per Radar Online.
Home Alone actor pointed out, “Kit was already not a good guy. I think John was looking a little side-eyed, like, 'Is everything all right over there? You doing good? Good day? Everything's all right? Everything good at home? All right.”
“I think he saw. Listen, even before the wave crested and the Home Alone stuff was happening, it was not hard to see how difficult my father was. It was no secret. He was already a monster,” explained Macaulay.
Richie Rich actor described his father as “a bad man”, calling him “abusive, physically and mentally”.
I can show you all my scars if I wanted to,” he admitted.
However, Macaulay disclosed that his fame was the reason behind his father’s resentment because he never achieved success as an actor.
“Everything he tried to do in life; I excelled at before I was 10 years old,” said the Uncle Buck actor.
Interestingly, Macaulay remembered late John’s “paternal” attitude toward him at the time.
“It’s a testament to the kind of man he was… [he] was just looking out for [me],” stated the actor.
Meanwhile, Macaulay added, “I remember John caring when not a lot of people did.”
For those unversed, John died of a heart attack at 43 in 1994.
