Coastal flood advisory issued for Hatters Island, minor overwash reported

A coastal flood advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Newport/ Morehead City regarding Hatteras Island.

The warning is of minor ocean flooding 1-2 ft above ground level on the low-lying terrain that can initiate shallow flooding of roads, car parks, parks and other properties along the waterfront.

Minor overwash of the ocean was seen in northern Buxton on Tuesday, September 9, at 6.30 a.m.

This was a coastal phenomenon reported 2.5 hours prior to the morning high tide.

Even when the N.C. Highway 12 is clear and open, motorists have been warned that they need to pay attention and they should not drive through the floods, which may destroy their vehicles.

The NWS also highlighted unsafe marine conditions along with the flooding, including high vacuities of rip currents, particularly at low tide at 3:30 p.m.

Strong longshore currents and shore break are also hazardous to the swimmers and surfers with possibility of neck and back injuries.

It is also significant to note that the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry is operating on limited schedule as a result of weather and water conditions.

It is advised to residents and travellers not to go near the flooding places, avoid drive past barricades and take precautions to protect the valuables that is in danger of floods.

NWS also recommended that people should not swim due to the life threatening rip currents.

When caught in a current, the NWS advises to remain calm, swim perpendicular to the shore and wave.

NWS also noted that the coastal advisory can be continued or revised as things unfold.
