5.2 magnitude earthquake hits Nea Stira, Evia, Rattling Attica

A significant earthquake initially measured at 5.2 hit off the southwestern coast of the island of Evia, causing widespread alarm in Evia and Attica.

The tremor, which was strongly felt after midnight local time Tuesday, gradually gained strength and was centered just five kilometers northwest of the town of Nea Stira at a shallow depth of 13.6 kilometers.

In view of the current situation, Professor Efthimis Lekkas and Seismologists are assessing the situation.

Commonly, this area is not prone to large earthquakes and aftershocks exceeding 4.0 magnitude could be expected.

To cope with current situations, scientists from the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OSAP) held an emergency video conference to evaluate the data.

The prime concern is the earthquake's proximity to the town of Oropos that could produce slightly stronger tremors.

The Fire Service has dispatched patrols across southern Evia and eastern Attica and two EMAK rescue teams remain on standby.

Meanwhile authorities have not reported any immediate casualties and major damage.

Many residents of Nea Stira spent the night outdoors with one resident saying that it was one of the strongest earthquakes they had ever experienced in this area.
