Buckingham Palace issues major update as extensive construction continues
King Charles takes meaningful step for Palace after making final decision about living arrangements
Buckingham Palace, which is the office of the monarch, shared an important statement to mark a big day.
King Charles – who is continuing his weekly cancer treatments, had made a meaningful decision about living at the Palace, which surprised the public given the heavy renovations the property is undergoing.
While the Palace doors remain closed until 2027, it marked a significant day for which the monarch had commission 10 artists to commemorate.
“Today is Windrush Day: a day to mark the contribution of the Caribbean men, women and children who arrived in Britain after the Second World War to help rebuild the country,” the statement read.
“In 2023, the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush to British shores, The King commissioned ten artists to create portraits of ten pioneering members of the Windrush Generation,” it added alongside the portraits shared in the carousel post. “These portraits are now proudly hung in Buckingham Palace.”
The message concluded with a request to see ‘Windrush: Portraits of a Generation’ which details more about the project.
The update comes after royal editor of the Daily Telegraph Camilla Tominey shared that the King has abandoned his initial plans to move into the Palace.
She revealed that the King has an “incurable” cancer for which he will continue to receive treatment until his last days. However, it is not a condition which will lead him to an early grave.
King Charles currently resides in Clarence House while Buckingham Palace is undergoing extensive constructions for the monarch to finally move into it. The renovations are scheduled to be finished in late 2027.
However, given the King’s health crisis, it is unlikely that he will move into the palace even after the restoration is complete.
Despite that, the King continues to treat it like an office and keeps making changes that marks his reign, just like the addition of artwork for Windrush Day.
