Maren Morris has recently made shocking admission on plagiarising Dolly Parton’s hit song 9 to 5.

During an appearance on the latest episode of Zach Sang Show, the country musician revealed, “There's a song on my second record called All My Favourite People and I remember it was like two weeks till the record was out and my mom was actually the one that was like, ‘I kind of noticed the verse/melody, sounds a little bit like 9 to 5.’”

“I think that's, like, any songwriter's worst fear is unintentionally being on top of a melody that already exists and it happens more than you think,” explained the 35-year-old.

The Chasing You crooner noted that when she “writes with so many different people and play the song so many times for loved ones before it ever gets into the public”.

“There's always, like, checks and balances,” remarked Maren.

The musician pointed out that extended collaborations produce “checks and balances and the extra experts in the room can help determine when a melody is a little bit too close to another song”.

The Highwomen singer noted that her “stomach dropped” when her mother told her she felt that there were noticeable similarities between her track and Dolly’s song.

“She was genuinely trying to give me a heads up and I listened to it immediately,” mentioned the Bones crooner.

However, Maren revealed Dolly’s reaction, adding, “It was close enough that she felt awful about what had happened and was looking for a way to reach out to Dolly’s camp and offer her a songwriting credit on the track.”

Dolly extended a courtesy to her that many of their peers would not have, as “a lot of other artists are litigious and would wait for the song to make as much money as possible before pursuing litigation”.
