'Moana 2' makes splash at box office over Thanksgiving weekend
Moana 2 dominates box office with a record-breaking debut, while Wicked continues to soar
Moana 2 is making waves at the box office this Thanksgiving.
According to People, Disney’s animated sequel debuted in theatres across North America on Wednesday, November 27, with an impressive five-day domestic opening of $221 million.
Families flocked to theatres to reconnect with Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson’s characters as they journey through the seas of Polynesia.
The sequel to 2016’s Moana has already broken multiple box office records, including the biggest five-day opening of all time.
Moana 2 has also set new records for the largest Thanksgiving weekend release (both three-day and five-day), the biggest Thanksgiving debut, and the largest Black Friday opening.
The film has become the biggest debut for Walt Disney Animation Studios, and internationally, it has earned $386 million, making it the second-biggest global film debut of the year.
The movie features a star-studded cast, including Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Hualā Chung, Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Scherzinger, alongside Cravalho, 24, and Johnson, 52.
While Moana 2 dominates the box office, Wicked continues to soar, earning another $80 million this weekend, per Box Office Mojo.
The Jon M. Chu-directed adaptation, which opened on November 22, grossed $114 million in its first weekend alone.
