Florida Supreme Court ruled on Monday that a 15-week abortion ban is to be continued, further allowing voters to decide on a proposed amendment which will decide the fate of abortion ban in the state, NBC News reported.
The law was passed in 2022 by Republican governor Ron DeSantis.
In 2023, right before DeSantis began his presidential campaign, he signed a law banning abortion after six weeks in the state, igniting an outcry from females who highlighted that many do not even find they’re pregnant in such short time.
Later the supreme court announced that the six-week ban law would remain blocked until a final decision was made on the 15-week proposal.
To decide whether the ban should remain or not, Floridians will be voting a "yes" or "no" on an abortion poll.
The amendment will need to be approved by a 60% population to be enshrined into law.
If it does pass, voters could reverse both the 15-week and six-week bans.
Other than Florida, Ohio, Michigan and Kansas are among states that have already passed ballot measures in favour of abortion rights since the US Supreme Court in 2022 overturned a longstanding nationwide right to abortion.
