Former US president Donald Trump voiced his backing of a general abortion ban with some exceptions but deliberately avoided a specific time limit, AFP reported.

Talking on "Fox News Sunday," Trump shared his ideas about the timeframe for the implementing of that particular ban, after his recent confirmation as a presumptive GOP nominee for the upcoming Presidential race.

Trump's position was still murky, hinting at a 16 week ban with exceptions for the cases of rape, incest, or the health of the mother in an article from the New York Times. With a lack of clarity, Trump indicated that he intended to give an advice, expressing his optimism about its approval.

It has been stated that the political sensitivity of the issue has been taken into account and the necessity of including exceptions, such as for electoral purposes, has been mentioned. He stressed the need to tailor individual beliefs to electability, especially when taking into consideration the recent setbacks of the Republican Party in elections where abortion was a primary theme.

Nevertheless, Trump recognised the existence of abortion bans after a specific gestational period in some other countries including France. However, Pence bemoaned Trump’s seeming hesitance to embark a more rigid anti-abortion stance during the 2020 presidential campaign.

Pence requested the Republican candidates to back the bans of at least 15 weeks, thus, the importance of the clear and definite positions on this controversial matter became obvious.
