Why is Sheryl Sandberg resigning from Meta board?
Sheryl Sandberg is said to have served as Meta's operations head for 14 years before resigning in 2022
Sheryl Sandberg is resigning from the board of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, after nearly two years of leaving her executive position as the chief operating officer (COO) at Facebook, according to The Guardian.
In her capacity as COO of Meta, Sandberg spearheaded the design of Facebook's digital advertising-based business strategy.
The 54-year-old revealed today that she will be leaving the Meta board once her tenure expires in May, having resigned from that position in June 2022.
“The Meta business is strong and well-positioned for the future, so this feels like the right time to step away,” Sandberg said in a Facebook post, adding that she would serve as an adviser to the company.
Having joined Facebook in 2008 from Google, Sandberg served as Meta's operations head for 14 years before resigning in 2022.
In response to Sandberg, Mark Zuckerberg, the creator and CEO of Meta, expressed his excitement for "a new chapter together."
Sandberg, who was once second in command to Zuckerberg, was one of the company's most noticeable executives.
As the chief operating officer of Mark Zuckerberg's social media empire, she dealt with several scandals, such as the Cambridge Analytica incident, the use of Facebook to plan the Capitol riot in 2021, and continuing worries about the company's use of user data mining to fuel its wildly profitable advertising business.
