Two dead, including suspect, after random stabbing attack in New York's Times Square

A violent confrontation unfolded in New York City’s Times Square when a 49-year-old woman randomly stabbed two pedestrians before being shot and killed by responding police officers.

The midday attack in one of the world's busiest tourist hubs resulted in the deaths of the female suspect and one of her victims, leaving city officials to address mounting concerns over public safety and mental health resources.

Armed with two large kitchen knives pulled from a shopping bag, the suspect identified as 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros of Queens—randomly approached and stabbed a 68-year-old man in the abdomen, then quickly turned and attacked a 32-year-old woman.

The 32-year-old female victim succumbed to her injuries at Bellevue Hospital while the male victim survived the attack and remains in stable condition.

NYPD officers engaged Cisneros for approximately four minutes outside an area substation, attempting to negotiate and deploying a Taser when she refused to drop the weapons.

As investigators review body camera footage and mental health history surrounding the suspect, the incident has reignited urgent conversations surrounding public safety infrastructure in high-traffic urban centers.

While swift police intervention averted a larger tragedy in the heart of Manhattan, the tragedy underscores ongoing challenges in managing acute psychiatric crises in public spaces.
