US working on major Belarus potash deal that could undercut Canada, Trump says
Canada is the world’s leading exporter of potash, a key ingredient in fertiliser used by farmers to improve crop production
US President Donald Trump says his administration is working on a major deal to buy potash from Belarus at a lower price than the United States currently pays Canada.
“The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday.
Trump described the potential agreement as a “massive deal” but did not provide details about its value, the amount of potash involved or when an agreement could be reached.
Canada is the world’s leading exporter of potash, a key ingredient in fertiliser used by farmers to improve crop production.
The United States is the largest destination for Canadian potash exports, making the American market particularly important to Canada’s industry.
Belarus is also a major player in the global potash market ranking third in production behind Canada and Russia.
Trump’s announcement comes as trade relations between Canada and the United States remain strained.
