Tom Cruise admits his 'Digger' role took 'all of my knowledge' from more than four decades

Tom Cruise stepped away from the action franchises for a new role in Digger.

In an interview with Empire, Cruise shared that taking on the character of Digger Rockwell for his upcoming movie was a "real leap into the unknown."

He said, "It took all of my knowledge, from all of the years of every film I made, to be able to play this character and fulfill the ambition of this movie."

The Mission Impossible star described how Inarritu helped him understand the character and the world of the film. "[Iñárritu] showed me, ‘Here’s kind of the character that I want.’ I was like, ‘Let’s f---ing go.’ I couldn’t wait."

Furthermore, Cruise shared that he likes hearing writers read their own work because it allows him to explore the rhythms of the story. "I’ve always done that. I want the writer to read me his idea, because then I can see where we’re going. We’re exploring rhythms, and I’m feeling the world. I’m literally an audience. I want to hear his voice. I want to understand, and see the world the way he sees it."

"I can change the voice and as the make-up’s coming on, you start feeling the movement,” Cruise added of creating the character. You put the suit on, the boots, and I find my own rhythm with it," he added.

Besides Tom Cruise, Digger also stars Jesse Plemons, Sandra Huller, Riz Ahmed and more. The film is set to release on October 2.
