PS5 games are now running on Xbox Series X
A developer ported the KyTyPS5 emulator to Xbox, getting Quake II running on rival hardware
Console emulation has quietly crossed a line few expected this soon: PS5 games are now booting on an Xbox Series X. It's an early, rough milestone, but one that shows just how fast PS5 emulation has accelerated after years of PS4 emulation dominating the retro and modern console-porting scene.
Two PC-based emulators, SharpEmu and KyTyPS5, have posted increasingly credible performance numbers running native PS5 titles like Demon's Souls and Grand Theft Auto V, though neither game is fully playable yet.
KyTyPS5's own progress reports show GTA V reaching its in-game menus and settings screen, while Quake II Remastered hits actual gameplay, albeit at roughly 7 frames per second with visible graphical glitches.
Both emulators remain Windows-only compatibility layers with limited, rapidly shifting game support, but reaching this far into commercial 3D PlayStation 5 titles marks real technical progress rather than a proof-of-concept curiosity.
But where this developer really went above and beyond was by emulating his fork of KyTyPS5 natively to an Xbox Series X.
The video that he uploaded seems to show the PlayStation 5 version of Quake II running on a Microsoft console, effectively opening up the door for native PlayStation 5 games being played on competing systems.
PS4 emulators have progressed enough to run entire libraries of games on affordable equipment, making it not all that surprising for PS5 to make swift advancements.
That the PlayStation 5 game can boot on such systems as the PC and even an Xbox indicates that the emulation community is catching up faster with the new generation consoles than it did with the previous one.
