FIFA hands Argentina players major bans after World Cup final clash
The breaches occurred during the incident with the three-world champions hit with bans and fines
FIFA reportedly bans Argentina players after World Cup final clashes. Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has been given a 10-match ban for the major role he played in on-field confrontations after his side were beaten 1-0 by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
Argentina have also been ordered to play behind doors with 50% capacity though implementation of one match is already suspended.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has reportedly been fined $321,000 for infringements of the Fifa prohibited terms relating to using a sports event for demonstrations of a team misconduct, and discriminatory fan misconduct by its supporters.
Several Argentina players held up a banner demanding Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands after beating England 2-1 in the World Cup semi-finals.
Barcelona told EI: “I don't think Paredes should be suspended. I understand it's not a good image for children, but I think there is also that side to football, which is a bit more physical, more aggressive.”
FIFA appointed a disciplinary prosecutor to determine what happened after the final whistle at the New York Jersey Stadium where multiple Argentina players and staff were involved in confrontations with Spanish players.
