Mets’ Jared Young taken to hospital after brutal on-field collision with pitcher Nolan McLean
Young was still experiencing concussion symptoms but had full use of his extremities
New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was carted off the field after being knocked unconscious in a frightening collision during Thursday’s 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Young and pitcher Nolan McLean collided while attempting to field Justin Crawford’s slow ground ball in the sixth inning.
McLean’s knee struck Young in the head, sending the 31-year-old face first to the ground, where he remained motionless.
“It was a terrifying moment on a baseball field. Took him a while to come to. It was a really scary collision,” Mets manager Andy Green said.
Young eventually regained consciousness and asked Green: “What happened?”
He was immobilised and taken from the field on a cart, giving a thumbs up as he left. Young was later taken to hospital, where a CT scan came back negative.
“He’s had a CT scan. Results have come back negative. So in that sense it’s very positive,” Green said.
Green said Young was still experiencing concussion symptoms but had full use of his extremities.
Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor described the incident as frightening: “It was scary to sit there and just know that he wasn’t with us in that moment. He was just somewhere else.”
McLean remained in the game to finish the sixth inning before being replaced.
