Maresca says the titles won by the club during the period of financial irresponsibility are not tainted
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has defended Manchester City’s Premier League titles insisting they are “absolutely not” tainted after the club was found guilty of the majority of the charges against them by the Premier League.
Maresca reiterated his trust in the club owner’s belief that they will overturn the ruling during a news conference on Friday centered around intense questioning.
The club has appealed against the verdict in a statement, and as they prepare to play their first match since the verdict was declared away to rivals Liverpool on Sunday, Maresca said: “The reason I joined this club is that I completely trust, 100%, the owner, the CEO, the sporting director, all the organisation. So I don't have any doubt about that.”
“I spoke with the club for sure. We all trust, and probably the right moment to speak about that is when we are going to win this appeal.”
The announcement of the independent finding which found City guilty of sham contracts and shell accounts to disguise secret funding of more than £830m, means that Maresca’s side expected to receive an even more glacial reception at Anfield.
Moreover, asked if he had apprehension regarding the stadium vibe, Maresca said: “It will be a tough game for sure. We need to be ready as the focus needs to be about the game but we know the environment at Anfield.”
