Prince Harry claims Prince William criticised Meghan Markle before physical altercation
Prince William reportedly once described Meghan Markle as "difficult," "rude" and "abrasive" before he and Prince Harry became involved in a physical fight.
The claim has been made in Prince Harry's memoir Spare. The Duke of Sussex has detailed in the book that the argument happened at Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace. He revealed that Prince William criticised Meghan before grabbing his younger brother by the collar and pushing him to the floor. Prince Harry claimed he landed on a dog bowl, which broke and left cuts on his back.
Prince Harry also wrote that Prince William encouraged him to fight back, but he refused. It is also claimed in book that after the argument, Prince William asked him not to tell Meghan about what had happened. When Prince Harry later told his wife, he wrote that she was not shocked but was saddened by the incident.
The relationship between the brothers has remained strained for several years. Prince Harry first spoke publicly about their growing distance in a 2019 interview, saying they were "on different paths." In 2021, he also told Oprah Winfrey there was "space" between them.
In Spare, published in 2023, Harry described Prince William as his "arch-nemesis" and shared several personal details about their relationship.
Neither Prince William nor Kensington Palace have publicly responded to the claims made in Spare.
