TDSB vice principal jobs cut as board removes 40 roles amid funding loss, enrolment decline

The Toronto District School Board says 40 vice-principals will not return to schools next academic year, as it adjusts staffing due to funding changes and declining enrolment.
The board confirmed to CP24 that 28 positions introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic are being cut after provincial funding expired.
A further 12 roles are being eliminated as student numbers fall, with about 5,000 fewer students expected in the 2026 to 2027 school year.
The TDSB did not specify which schools will be affected, citing ongoing staffing adjustments.
“Every spring, the TDSB goes through a process to determine how staff are placed in schools for the upcoming year,” Ryan Bird of the TDSB said in an email to CP24.
“This planning helps ensure that every school has the staff required to support the needs of students.”
The board is also moving towards a shared leadership model, where some vice-principals will oversee two smaller schools. Bird said this approach has “successfully been implemented” elsewhere.
The changes come as the province continues oversight of several school boards, including the TDSB.
