Duffer Brothers reveal early idea about Steve Harrington’s death in series

Duffer Brothers revealed which two main characters they almost killed off in Stranger Things and how they remain safe.

While the fans are concerned about their beloved character Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) fate in season finale, the show’s makers, Matt and Ross Duffer, left them in shock after revealing how the original storyline of Keery would’ve looked like.

In conversation with Entertainment Weekly, they said that Keery was originally going to die at the end of season one, but decided to spare him after liking the actor.

"We just fell in love with Joe Keery, but had we not liked Joe Keery, Steve would’ve been gone," he said.

Matt and Ross further explained that David Harbour’s Hopper was also close to death in previous season.

"I think death grazed him," Matt said, who many fans believed had died in the gigantic mall explosion that ended the show’s third season.

“There was a version where he perished at the end of 3. It’s been a while since we had those discussions, but I feel like he came the closest to dying," he continued. “It would’ve been very easy to kill him.”

However, they shared that the character "still had growing to do. We hadn’t finished his story. It’s important to us to be able to finish the stories we want to finish and not just be offing people for shock value."

Talking about the death of characters in Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers say they’ve considered killing more characters, including major ones, but they opt not to because of what would happen after a shocking death.

“What often holds us back is you have to talk about the repercussions,” Matt says. “This is a total hypothetical: You kill Mike. It just makes the show rather depressing and bleak, and it becomes entirely about that.”

He continued, “We try to be careful, if there is a death, that it has real repercussions. So we just wanna be careful about when and how frequently we do it."

Stranger Things will premiere in three volumes with first one releasing on November 26, 2nd on December 25 and 3rd on December 31.
