Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are resurrecting a fan-favourite franchise that refuses to rest in peace.
According to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, the beloved duo is in talks to reunite for a brand-new sequel in The Mummy franchise — 26 years after first bringing Rick and Evelyn O’Connell to life in the 1999 cult classic.
The upcoming film will reportedly be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the Radio Silence duo behind Ready or Not and the recent Scream reboots. Plot details and a release date are still under wraps, but fans can expect a mix of action and supernatural chaos fitting for the franchise’s legacy.
Fraser, 56, last appeared as Rick in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, though Weisz’s role was recast with Maria Bello. The new project would mark the first time the Oscar-winning actor and Weisz, 55, share the screen in the series since 2001’s The Mummy Returns.
The original films became cult favourites for their mix of humour, heart, and old-school adventure. And while Tom Cruise’s 2017 reboot failed to capture that magic, Fraser once told Variety that he believed the franchise works best when it leans into its fun.
“The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary,” he said. “I know how difficult it is to pull it off. I tried to do it three times.”
Weisz also reflected fondly on the series in 2023, telling Net-a-Porter, “Everybody in The Mummy was just brilliant, and it was just some alchemical thing in it, that it had charm — and charm is such a strange thing. It's either there or it isn't.”
