Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog threeare dominating the holiday box office.
During the Christmas holiday week from Wednesday to Sunday, Mufasa: The Lion King topped box office with an estimated $63.8, while Sonic the Hedgehog three closely followed with $60.4 million.
However, during the traditional weekend from December 27th – 29th, Sonic the Hedgehog three narrowly overtook The Lion King prequel, estimated $38 million, compared to Mufasa's $37.1 million.
Both the films were released in US last weekend, with Sonic the Hedgehog three becoming an instant blockbuster grossing $60 million while Mufasa trailed with$35 million.
Despite bouncing back on Christmas, Mufasa: The Lion King still lags behind Sonic three in all over North America, with domestic total of $113.5 million through Sunday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The other two movies that werepopular during the Christmas season wereNosferatu and Bob Dylan’s biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Nosferatu was released in US on Christmas Day, which achieved an impressive five opening of $40.3 million, including $21.2 million for the weekend. While it’s rival,A Complete Unknown, received $23.3 million for the five days.
“The final six weeks of 2024 delivered one of the most eclectic and irresistible slate of films, generating a huge amount of box office heat that is taking the year out on a high note,” senior analyst Paul Dergarabedian toldVariety.
