Imtiaz Ali talks about filming Chamkila's character without glorifying it

Imtiaz Ali shared that he filmed the character Chamkila without glorifying it.

For the unversed, Imtiaz Ali recently directed the film titled Amar Singh Chamkila, a biopic based on the tragic murder of the renowned Punjabi singer.

The movie featured Diljit Dosanjh as the late singer whereas, Parineeti Chopra portrayed the role of his wife, Amarjot.

The film, which is streaming on Netflix, has been receiving praise and appreciation from critics and viewers.

Now, speaking about the movie's lead character, Imtiaz shared with Mid-Day that, "...when depicting someone’s life, you should have the liberty not to change the facts, but to represent all aspects of them."

He added, "If you don’t show the mistakes they made, then what’s the point of glorifying them? I do not like those biopics that endlessly glorify the person they are based on. That becomes very boring."

"Chamkila is a case in point as there’s this kind of dual response from the audience towards him. I felt I had to present the human side of Chamkila. I didn’t set out to make him come across as this neat and clean person, which he was not," the Jab We Met director stated.

Imtiaz believes that the flaws and irregularities in a character lead to building a connection with the audience. He continued, "They know that this guy is human, thus enabling them to relate to and root for them.”
