It is going to be another strange year for television as a handful of longtime fan favourite shows gear up to say goodbye. While ABC’s Castle is not coming back for a ninth season, the upcoming few episodes will serve as the show’s last hurrah.

It is going to be another strange year for television as a handful of longtime fan favourite shows gear up to say goodbye. While ABC’s Castle is not coming back for a ninth season, the upcoming few episodes will serve as the show’s last hurrah.

Castle’s two lead stars, Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic have quickly and quietly moved on to their next projects respectively. Nathan Fillion, 45, is already filming for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2 alongside Chris Pratt. Stana Katic, 38, meanwhile has a bunch of films under production. In Lost in Florence, Katic will team up with Agents of Shield star Brett Dalton. In Sister Cities, she will star alongside an ensemble cast that will include other TV household names like   Amy Smart, Michelle Trachtenberg and Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario.

Castle isn’t the only show getting the axe. As many as 24 shows are going kaput as television ratings and the combined strength of newer ventures like Netflix dominate the scene.  In addition to Castle, ABC has also cancelled Agent Carter (after two seasons), Muppets and Nashville.

CBS is also looking to replace key shows like Person of Interest which will go off-air after the ongoing fifth season concludes. The Good Wife has already said goodbye and Melissa McCarthy-starrer show Mike and Molly is also going off-air.

NBC has cancelled Eva Longaria’s comedy show Telenovela while Matt Le Blanc-starrer Episodes is also getting the axe. Showtime is also canceling the Don Cheadle comedy House of Lies while USA network is taking Royal Pains off air. TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles is also ending after the seventh season is aired. This means there is room for a lot of new-age shows. Who will prevail: time will tell.
