Why Kate Middleton's wedding tiara was smaller than usual

Kate Middleton did not follow the royal family tradition when it came to wearing a tiara on her wedding day. 

Because the Princess of Wales did not come from a royal background and did not own a family tiara, Queen Elizabeth lent her the Cartier Halo tiara which was a much smaller design that was thought to be easier for the royal to carry.
