GUADALAJARA, Mexico: Nine people were injured and 10 detained during a pitch invasion in the heat of a Mexican football playoff between Guadalajara city rivals Atlas and Chivas, authorities said Monday.
It was the latest disruption in a Latin American match after the suspension of the Boca Juniors-River Plate derby in Buenos Aires last week, where Boca fans sprayed toxic substances on River players.
Sunday’s quarter-final of Mexico’s Clausura-2015 tournament was temporarily suspended when Atlas fans stormed the pitch with the home side losing 4-1 to Chivas.
The referee stopped the game in the 57th minute while security officials tried desperately to contain fans who were attacking Atlas players and coaching staff.
The game resumed almost 20 minutes later, with the score ending at 4-1 for Chivas.
Guadalajara security commissioner Jose Angel Campa said 10 Atlas fans had been detained “for fostering disorder and pitch invasion.”
Three private security personnel from the Jalisco stadium and three Atlas fans were injured, Campa said. Three other civilians who were not part of the disorder were also hurt. None of the injuries were serious.
The Guadalajara city government decided to close the 60,000-capacity Jalisco stadium following the game due to “the obstruction of hallways and lack of security measures in the pitch invasion.”
