6 women kidnapped, 4 raped every day in 2014

According to annual statistics on violence against women (VAW) released by Aurat Foundation on Monday, 6 women were kidnapped, 4 were raped, 3 committed suicide and 6 were murdered in Pakistan every day in the year 2014.
The alarming statistics show that in total, 10,139 cases of violence against women were reported in the year 2014. Around 7,548 incidents were reported in Punjab that topped the list while keeping the past record. 1,447 cases were reported form Sindh followed by 736 cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa and 190 incidents in Balochistan. 140 cases of VAW were reported in the capital territory and 9 from Fata.
In Punjab, 1866 cases of kidnapping were reported in 2014 as compared to 161 in Sindh, 75 in KP, 6 in Balochistan and 62 in ICT. The difference among provinces was high in murder cases where 964 women were murdered in Punjab, 249 in Sindh, 324 in KP, 46 in Balochistan, 18 in ICT and 9 in FATA.
The number of women raped or gang raped was alarmingly high in Punjab with 1408 reported cases. 85 women were raped or gang raped in Sindh, 5 cases were reported in KP, 4 in Balochistan and 13 in ICT with no such case reported in Fata.
In Punjab, 642 women committed suicide followed by Sindh again where 155 such cases were reported. 106 suicide incidents were reported in KP, 21 in Balochistan and 7 in ICT. There was no such case reported from FATA.
The number of honour killings was also highest in Punjab with 362 reported cases as compared to 212 of Sindh, 60 of KP and 77 of Balochistan. 2 cases of honour killings were also reported in ISLAMABAD.
Sindh acceded Punjab in cases of domestic violence and sexual assault. In Sindh, 202 cases of domestic violence were reported as compared to 191 cases in Punjab where as 36 cases of sexual assault occurred in Sindh as compared to 31 cases in Punjab.
Another alarming situation can be noticed in Punjab with regard to cases of acid throwing and burning. The situation calls for immediate attention as 53 incidents of women burning and 54 cases of acid throwing were reported in Punjab as compared to 0 cases of burning and 3 cases of acid throwing in Sindh. 1 Case of acid throwing was reported in Islamabad, 5 in Balochistan, 2 in KP and 0 in Fata. Similarly, there were 2 cases of burning reported form KP and no such case was reported from other parts of the country.
In the category of Miscellaneous, 1,977 cases were reported from Punjab, 344 from Sindh, 94 from KP, 1 from Balochistan and 27 from ICT.
Main source these statistics were reported cases of violence against Women in media reports. The Aurat Foundation is collecting these statistics since 2008 from 4 English, 20 Urdu; 2 Sindhi daily newspapers, in addition to various regional papers. Data from state institutions like the police, hospitals, medico-legal cases and government-run shelter homes are also included in data.
There are ten board categories of crimes used for organizing the data, including abduction and kidnapping, murder, domestic violence, suicide, honour killing, rape and gang rape, sexual assault, acid throwing and burning, while the category ‘miscellaneous’ constitutes eleven forms of violence: hurt and bodily injury, torture, attempt to kidnap, attempt to rape, attempted murder, attempted suicide, threat to life, ‘wanni’, sexual harassment, women trafficking, ‘watta-satta’.
