LAHORE

Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Punjab President Ejaz Chaudhry on Monday said the PML-N government had agreed to call Rangers in Punjab on the pressure of Pakistan Army but the decision could only produce positive results if policing powers were given to the force.

In a statement, Ejaz Chaudhry said the Punjab government did allow operation against terrorists in Punjab for three years which eventually worsened the law and order situation. He also demanded the Punjab government remove all ministers who allegedly had links with banned outfits, adding an indiscriminate Rangers operation was the need of the hour in the province.

Meanwhile, Waleed Iqbal, President PTI Urban Lahore, in a statement said the announcement to call Rangers in Punjab was in fact another eyewash by the PML-N government as it couldn’t afford to empower the force.

The PTI leader said the PML-N leadership was scared of an indiscriminate action by Rangers which would expose the ruling party itself, charging that at least half of Nawaz League would face arrest if a real action was taken.

Moreover, former Governor Malik Ghulam Mustafa Khar is expected to join PTI in the coming days, claimed the media cell of the PTI.

UHS: Outgoing Vice-Chancellor (VC) Maj-Gen (R) Prof Muhammad Aslam was given a farewell on Monday as the newly-appointed acting VC, Prof Dr Junaid Sarfraz Khan, took the charge of University of Health Sciences (UHS). The farewell ceremony was organised by the faculty and staff of the university.

According to a press release issued here, Prof Junaid and other faculty members paid rich tribute to the services of the outgoing VC and termed him a great asset for the varsity.

Prof Junaid said one of the major achievements of Prof Aslam was to place the students experience at the heart of the university’s strategic planning and there had been many initiatives to support this in curriculum, support services and facilities.

“Under his leadership, the university has been outward looking at both local and international levels”, Prof Junaid said, adding that the first phase of development of UHS Kala Shah Kaku was also completed during Prof Aslam’s tenure.

In his address, outgoing VC, Prof Aslam, said it had been a learning and reflective experience to enhance good governance, academia, research and facilitation in the university and its affiliated institutions.

“The tenure provided me an opportunity to meet with some of the best minds in medical and health sciences, which gave me the impetus to lead, inspire and advance”, he said, adding that he was leaving the university in a strong place, and with its best days ahead of it.

On this occasion, the outgoing VC was presented a resolution, unanimously passed by the faculty and staff, recognising and commending his services. A shield was also presented to him as a measure of appreciation.
