Peace committee meeting held

SUKKUR: Deputy Commissioner of Khairpur, Fayaz Hussain Abbasi, on Monday chaired a meeting of the peace committee to ensure law and order situation during Muharram. Addressing the meeting, he urged the representatives of Shia and Sunni sects to help the administration maintain the law and order situation. The SSP of Khairpur, Ghulam Azfar Mahaisar, briefed the meeting on different aspects of security measures. He said that peace committees had been constituted in 40 police stations. Colonel Zia, commander of the Rangers, told the meeting that over 1,000 Rangers personnel would be involved in Muharram duties.
Modi ‘not to attend’ Saarc moot in Islamabad

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the November's SAARC conference to be held in Islamabad . According to Geo News, citing Indian media reports, Modi’s decision of not visiting Pakistan has already been made. An announcement on whether an Indian ministerial representative will be sent instead of Modi will be made closer to the date. The reports further said this decision was taken weeks prior to Sunday’s attack in Indian Occupied Kashmir in which 17 soldiers were killed.
Dacoits injure journalist on resistance

FAISALABAD: A senior journalist was injured on resistance by three dacoits in People’s Colony police limits on Monday. Three dacoits broke into the house of senior journalist Riaz Malik and tried to loot it, but he resisted. It infuriated the dacoits and they injured him. The victim, however, managed to overpower one of the three dacoits while the others fled. Later, the dacoit was handed over to police. Meanwhile, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah has condemned the incident and directed CPO Afzal Ahmad Kausar to constitute a police team to arrest the fleeing dacoits.
LHC summons finance secretary in double pension case

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has summoned special secretary finance for September 22 for not paying double pension to retired government employees despite a court verdict in this regard. LHC Chief Justice Mansur Ali Shah heard the petition filed by elderly pensioners. The counsel for the petitioners stated that under the government policy, the retiring government employees had deposited 40 per cent of their pension in the national exchequer for 12 years. The LHC announced in its verdict that those retired employees who deposited their pension for 12 years would get double pension with other additions in their pension. However, these elderly pensioners were not being paid double pension despite the court verdict. The court summoned the finance official for explanation and adjourned hearing till Sept 22.
Two killed in Sukkur

SUKKUR: A man and a woman were killed in Baqrani. Police shifted the bodies to a hospital. They said that the accused, Ayaz, had surrendered himself to the police. Police said that further investigations were underway.
Writer robbed

SUKKUR: Unidentified bandits barged into the house of a writer, Muhammad Ali Pathan, in Larkana, held his family members hostage at gunpoint and robbed them of cash, gold and other valuables. Writers and poets of the city protested against the incident and demanded of the police to arrest the robbers.
Fazl briefed on DI Khan projects

DERA ISMIAL KHAN: Senior officials of various departments briefed Chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Maulana Fazlur Rehman about the mega development projects announced by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during his visit to the district.
The National Highway Authority officials informed Maulana Fazlur Rehman that work on the Yark-Rahmanikhel section of the CPEC had been launched. The officials said that this section of the CPEC would be completed before its scheduled time. They added that two inter-changes, Panyala-cum-Abdul Khalil and Yark Interchange, and several overhead bridges would be constructed on the section.
Bid to smuggle kestrel birds foiled

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: The officials of the Wildlife Department on Monday foiled a bid to smuggle 80 kestrel birds to Balochistan province in a passenger bus and arrested its driver, an official said. Regional Officer Wildlife Department Khalil Kundi said that the action was taken on the directives of higher authorities of the department. He said the Wildlife Department officials established a checkpoint on Dera Darya Bridge and seized the birds. He said the birds were being smuggled from Punjab province to Balochistan for illegal hunting of wild birds. He said that some of the precious birds were found dead.
Youth killed over old enmity

CHARSADDA: A youngster was killed over an old family feud in the limits of City Police Station here on Monday, official sources said. One Masood, brother of the victim Shakeel, registered a case with the police against accused Suleman, Arqam and Ilyas. He told the police that the accused allegedly shot and injured his brother near AC Chowk. The injured was taken to hospital who succumbed to his injuries. The accused escaped.
Woman dies as roof caves in

GHALLANAI: A woman was killed and another sustained injuries when roof of a house collapsed at Safi tehsil in Mohmand Agency on Monday, official sources said.They said that room and boundary wall of a house of one Roz Momin Khan collapsed due to its dilapidated condition in Sagi Bala area. As a result, his daughter and wife trapped under the debris. The locals rushed to the spot and retrieved the body of his daughter while his wife was rescued in injured condition.
Two die in Dir accident

TIMERGARA: Two persons were killed and five others sustained injuries when a passenger van collided with a car at Saddo on the main Timergara-Chakdarra road here on Monday, the police officials said. They said passenger van rammed into the car in a bid to overtake another vehicle, adding, the driver of the van, Ubaidullah, and a 6-year-old girl died on the spot while two women sustained injuries.
Seven die as speeding van falls into ditch
DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Seven people died and four others injured in a road accident.Sources said a passenger pick-up van was on its way from Dera Ismail Khan when near Kot Falak it went out of control and plunged into a deep ditch. As a result, seven people including two women and two children died on the spot while four others were critically injured. The bodies and injured were shifted to a nearby hospital. According to political administration, accident happened due to speeding. The bodies were handed over to the legal heirs after medico-legal formalities.
Govt must not stop PTI protest, says Gilani
MULTAN: PPP’s senior leader Yusuf Raza Gilani said on Monday that the PTI has every right to protest. Therefore, the government must not stop them from protesting.Talking to media, Gilani said if state institutions perform as they were expected, there would be no issues during the Raiwind march. He put serious concerns that Panama Leaks scandal was an important matter and should be dealt accordingly.
Hot, humid weather predicted in country

LAHORE: Weather remained hot and humid despite scattered and traced rain was recorded Tuesday while Met office predicted similar weather condition for Wednesday (today).The Met officials said continental air was prevailing over most parts of the country and a shallow trough of westerly wave was likely to approach upper parts of the country on Tuesday and likely to persist during next 24-48 hours. They predicted mainly hot and dry weather in most parts of the country while rain-thunderstorm is expected at a few places in Kashmir and its adjoining hilly areas. Tuesday’s highest maximum temperature was recorded at Sukkur where mercury reached 44°C while in city it was 35 C and humidity was 57 per cent.
Islamabad Police to establish complaint cell

Islamabad: Islamabad Police have decided to establish a complaint cell to resolve the public grievances particularly with police having the sole purpose to inculcate friendly-police ecology and make police department more service oriented. The decision to this effect was made here on Monday by Inspector General of Police Tariq Masood Yasin in a meeting held here to review the various policing measures in the city. The IGP Islamabad ordered the officials of Operation Division to listen complaints of citizens and address them. He asked SSP (Operations) Sajid Kiani to hold ‘Open Kutchery’ twice a week at zonal level and also appreciated his efforts.
KTH conducts video conference on colorectal diseases
PESHAWAR: The management of Medical Teaching Institute of Khyber Teaching Hospital on Monday achieved a milestone by organising first live videoconference on colorectal diseases at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (PGMC) Karachi. The live video conference of the surgical week for colorectal diseases started on September 19 and will be continued till September 22.Prof Robin K.S Phillips of St-Mark’s Hospital, England is master trainer of live demonstration and Prof Neil Mortensen from John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, UK are the course coordinators. —Correspondent
