Dewan Group to launch 500 electric taxis in Sindh
KARACHI: Dewan Group of Industries, a prominent industrial conglomerate in Pakistan, has announced its ambitious plan to introduce 500 electric taxis in Sindh at an estimated cost of Rs2.5 billion. The initiative aims to revolutionise the province’s public transport sector and promote environmentally friendly commuting options.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting held at the Sindh Investment Department’s office, where Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Investment and Public-Private Partnership Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar met Chairman of Dewan Group Dewan Muhammad Yousuf Farooqui.
During the meeting, Farooqui He said his company’s objective was to play a pivotal role in addressing the challenges of public transport in Sindh by providing eco-friendly solutions. Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar welcomed Dewan Group’s investment and emphasised its importance in solving Sindh’s transportation challenges. “This project aligns perfectly with the Sindh government’s vision of promoting environment-friendly transport systems,” he said. “It will not only enhance public mobility but also strengthen technological advancements in the region.”
Qamar further noted that the initiative would have a positive economic impact by generating employment opportunities in the province. “The manufacturing and deployment of electric vehicles under this project will foster technological development, attract further investments, and create new job prospects for the people of Sindh,” he said. Dewan Group’s project comes at a time when Pakistan is grappling with rising pollution levels and urban mobility issues. The introduction of electric taxis is seen as a step toward adopting sustainable transportation methods and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The government of Sindh has been actively encouraging investments in green technologies, particularly in the transport sector, to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. Dewan Group’s initiative is expected to serve as a model for similar projects in other parts of the country. The project is currently in its planning phase, with Dewan Group aiming to roll out the first batch of electric taxis in the coming months.
