The ’80s are famous for a lot of things - but it’s the sheer craziness of the hairstyles that tops our list. According to the runways, 1980s looks are officially back in fashion. We have compiled some of the hottest trends of ’80s to get you inspired...

The Side Ponytail:

The side ponytail was a hugely popular hairstyle of the ’80s. Regular ponytails were not enough for the ’80s fashion world. We had to make them different so we started wearing our ponytails off to the side. We didn’t wear them low. That would have been too discreet. No, we wore our side ponytails way up high and gave them a bit of a tease for extra body. Hair was pulled all the way to one side of the head or the other, and secured as tightly as possible.
The style could be worn with or without bangs, and was secured with plenty of hairsprays.
However, it looked great with our high up bangs, scrunchies, and floppy hair bows. We would put on a pair of large hoop earring and make the look totally fabulous.

Crimped Locks:

Crimping irons provided another way to add wave and body to hairstyles of ’80s .
The obvious pattern crimping irons made in the hair was reflective of
the bold and attention-grabbing styles of this decade.

The Whale Spout:

Be spouty this season

Debbie Gibson may not have invented the whale-spout ponytail, but she made nearly every young girl reach for a scrunchie and tie one on. The modern-day update? A looser version for maintaining volume as you sleep.

Ultra Curly Perm:

Perms were hot in the ’80s and nothing was better than a very curly permed look. Women sported tight curls and spiral perms everywhere. Teasing curly hair added to the volume - an essential for 1980s hair.

The Scrunchie:

Neon, white, or any shade, scrunchies were the best and biggest looks to accessorize your do. Designed with geometrical shapes, glitter, and other gems or beads, scrunchies were awesome in the ’80s, and that’s where they should stay.

Punk Rock ’80s Hair:

Popular ’80s bands were iconized not just for their music, but for their hair, too. Huge spikes,
Mohawks and big punk styles ruled the day.

The Madonna Wrap-Up:

Madonna wrap-up trend is as fun as ever

Madonna gave so much good hair in the ’80s, but our favourite was her slightly punk teased chignon finished off with a thick piece of fabric tied into a loose bow. Those ‘Lucky Star’/ ‘Borderline’ days delivered all the sexy texture we craved as teenagers with a new badass way to wear the bows we still had around from childhood.

Hair Teasing:

Back in the ’80s, our bangs said it all. In addition to volume, eighties hairstyles would be nothing without height. Huge bangs were the quintessential ’80s style. They were permed into a mass of frizz or curls and then, with a comb, hair bangs were teased high up, off the forehead. It took about an entire can of hairspray to keep the mess up there, but we did it anyway. Just how high we could tease up our bangs became a status thing. One inch off our heads wasn’t enough. Two inches was okay. If we could get over three inches high off the front of our heads, we were the coolest.

The Mullet:

The mullet, popularly referred to as the ‘short in the front and party in the back hairstyle,’ was one of the popular hair trends back in the ’80s. It was characterized by short hair at the sides
and front with long hair running down the back. This trend has already made a comeback on fashion runways. Toned down variations of the mullet hairstyles have been spotted by several celebrities.

Styling Aids:

With the exception of ‘pulled up’ looks, one thing that you can say about all of the ’80s hairstyles is that they took quite a bit of work. Hot rollers, curling irons, crimping irons, perms, mousse and gel were just a few of the styling aids necessary to create the most popular looks of the decade.
