Dear Ed,
I am an aspiring writer. I get good remarks and grades on my composition assignments, and I think reading Us and other magazines has helped me a lot in this regard. My articles are published in my college newsletters but now I want to get published in Us magazine. Are there any specific rules or guidelines I need to follow? Also, what should be the word count for an article?
Basit Rizvi, Karachi
There are no guidelines as such, Basit, but whatever you write should be relevant to the youth. The word count for one page is 550 to 650 words, and for a two-page article it is 1100 to 1200. You can email your articles or stories to us at us.mag@thenews.com.pk.
Dear Editor,
I am an English language teacher and quite enjoy the Poets’ Corner. Most of the poets are simply impressive and I am happy that you showcase their talent.
I think you should have an inter-school poetry writing contest to discover new and aspiring poets. This would encourage many aspiring poets.

A very good suggestion, Kausar. We will definitely consider it.
Hi Ed,
I am an old but lazy writer. I read the mag regularly and often think I would write to praise or criticize a particular article, but it’s my laziness that is my undoing. Ed, I decided to write because I have been missing my favourite writer Saniyyah Eman. After Turn, I haven’t read anything written by her. I loved her stories and think you should make her write for us.

Dear Editor,
Movies in 2022: The year of reprising heroes and franchises by Fatima Zakir (16 December issue) rocked. I simply love Fatima’s style of writing and share her passion for Marvel Cinematic Universe. I was pleased to note that Pakistani pictures also featured prominently in the yearly roundup. Good job, Fatima.

Dear Ed,
I am into gardening and really enjoyed Houseplants in bottles by SG in the 16 December issue. The tips were useful and instructions simple to follow. In my city, the soil is so fertile that growing plants in the garden isn’t a problem, but looking after indoor plants needs a bit of work. Please make gardening a regular section. Oh, please publish my greeting this time. Last year, I was late but this time I sent it two weeks in advance.

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (R.A):
When the Muslims arrived in Medina, they used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time for it. During those days, the practice of Adhan for the prayers had not been introduced yet. Once they discussed this problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people suggested the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a trumpet like the horn used by the Jews, but Umar was the first to suggest that a man should call (the people) for the prayer; so Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W) ordered Bilal (R.A) to get up and pronounce the adhan for prayers.
