It’s raining trailers this month. After the trailer launch of Shoaib Mansoor’s Verna, followed by that of Shaan Shahid’s Arth earlier this month, both of which received good reviews, the trailer of Rangreza saw the light of the day at an event last weekend. Though it features all three lead actors including Bilal Ashraf, Urwa Hocane and Gohar Rasheed, it’s the latter who steals the limelight with his complex character and what looks very much like a compelling performance.

The trailer opens with Bilal singing in front of a packed audience. He comes from a well-off family and falls in love with a girl called Reshmi, essayed by Urwa Hocane, who doesn’t reciprocate the feelings. Gohar, on the other hand, stars as a dholak player from a very humble background who has a very complicated personality. The film follows the story of these two musicians, played by Bilal and Gohar while tracing a love triangle among the three as the latter also falls for Reshmi.

With music as its central theme, Rangreza touches upon several issues that are prevalent in our society. According to Gohar, the film is “a complete family entertainer” with all the ingredients that one expects in a commercial film.

“It has romance, action, comedy – all the ingredients you need for a family entertainer. It also has an item number that features an item boy for the first time accompanied by 200 transgender people. Rangreza talks about family values as well but in a very sub textual way. There is a lot more to it including a love triangle and social commentary. It reflects on how our society functions but in a very humorous way, without being preachy.”

Coming back to the trailer, the first half lacks cohesion but things improve tremendously in the second half of said trailer. Bilal and Urwa share good onscreen chemistry while Gohar stands out as the intense anti-hero. What the film holds in store for us is yet to be seen but by the looks of it, Rangreza looks promising.

Aside from Gohar, Bilal and Urwa, the film also stars Ghana Ali and model turned actor Alyzeh Gabool who is said to be making her cinematic debut with the project. Musicians associated with the project include Abida Parveen, Asrar Shah and Qurram Hussain of music group Josh. Directed by debutant Aamir Mohiuddin, the film is all set to hit cinemas on December 21, the same day when Shaan Shahid-led Arth, which is also a musical, is releasing. A box office clash looks imminent.
