Burka Avenger has bagged multiple awards worldwide ever since its release. The character, Burka Avenger that refers to the female protagonist, Jiya, was named one of the most Influential Fictional Characters of 2013 by Time magazine while the series also made it to Emmy nominations. It is not only aimed at entertaining viewers but also talks about injustices against women in the society. Hence it doesn’t come as a surprise that the series has been recognised by the United Nations and has been appreciated for being in line with a campaign that emphasizes women’s role in promoting peace and fighting extremism.

“Burka Avenger can be a great messenger not only for women’s issues but because it’s animation, you can highlight very sensitive issues, it makes them (appear) softer,” Haroon Rashid, well known singer and series creator told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Rashid will also be speaking at a UN Women conference that is scheduled to take place in the Thai capital, Bangkok in the coming days. It aims to explore ways in which they can use creative approaches to promote women’s role in peace-building.

While no official announcement of a possible partnership between the UN agency and Rashid has been made so far, the two parties said that they are keen to collaborate with each other.

Burka Avenger was initially launched in Pakistan, followed by Afghanistan and India and most recently in Indonesia. The series has also been produced in various languages including Urdu, Tamil, Hindi, Pashto and Indonesian.
