Singer-songwriter Hadiqa Kiani has managed to impress both fans and several industry insiders with her 6-track EP, Wajd. Having released four songs (‘Kamli Da Dhola’, ‘Bhit Ja Bhitai’, ‘Aaj Rung Hai’ and ‘Kamli – Bulleh Shah’) in a number of languages over the past few weeks, Hadiqa is back with a new track from the transcendental Wajd and it is as impressive as the rest of the releases we’ve seen and heard in 2017.

Hadiqa Kiani’s fifth release from Wajd is here and it is sublime.

‘Chaap Tilak is written originally by Hazrat Ameer Khusro in Braj Bhahsha and is recreated by Hadiqa in thrilling fashion on Wajd. Moreover, it is accompanied by a terrific, theatrical music video that is envisioned by Abdullah Harris.

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Haveli Barood Khana in old Lahore, it is meant to be a showcase of wedding festivities and makes a strong impression. Hasnain Lehri stars as the groom while Anushey Mughal features as the bride; Hadiqa also plays a central role. With wardrobe provided by Ali Xeeshan, think of the music video as a short-film that has the spirit of old-school romance.

Speaking about the single and its video, Hadiqa shared in a press statement: “Life is all about collecting sweet memories, when we allow ourselves to be happy we flow with the rhythm of life. ‘Chaap Tilak’ is a simple video with all the basic attributes of non - materialistic expressions; just cherishing little gestures and exchanging happiness, which our Wajd journey is all about.”

Though ‘Chaap Tilak’ has been sung by many greats including Farid Ayaz and Abu Mohammad, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Abida Parveen, Hadiqa Kiani’s version from Wajd, produced by Irfan Kiani, is sublime. Explaining the sonic treatment given to the song, producer Irfan Kiani said that he believes in “minimalism” which is how the song has been structured.

Abdullah Harris, the mastermind behind the visuals of Wajd, meanwhile noted in the press statement, “Make music and its videos, not war. Then spread it everywhere so we can all communicate through this universal language of music, art and visuals to soak in this state of Wajd.”

Though this is the second last release from Wajd (with one more song on the cards), the journey of metamorphosis will continue for Hadiqa. As she told Instep in an exclusive interview earlier this month: “Wajd is more than music; it is a lifestyle and a state of mind. Within Wajd, there is the temporary and there is the permanent. It is on you how you connect with its depth, the depth of your being, the higher self.”
