It can only be described as the most unusual of team-ups but One Direction’s Harry Styles is teaming up with ace filmmaker Chris Nolan for the upcoming film, Dunkirk.

The singer-turned-actor has joined an all-star cast that includes names like Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and Cillian Murphy in the war saga. Reports suggest that Styles will feature prominently in the multi-million dollar project and has lost his famous long hair to play the role of an army grunt.

Nolan, often considered one of the greatest filmmakers working in Hollywood today, is going all out for his new film which is based on the Second World War and chronicles the “evacuation of Dunkirk during the British military operation that saved 330,000 lives as Allied soldiers were surrounded by German forces”.

Actor Mark Rylance briefly spoke to Collider about working with Nolan in the period film. “Every great filmmaker at some moment makes a war film,” explained Rylance. “But Chris’ script-writing is so brilliant that I think he has the potential to make a very, very powerful and simple, pure war film about a miraculous loss. I think it has the potential to be just a marvelous film.”

According to a source quoted by the Mirror, Styles’ role in the film has been expanded because he’s managed to impress Nolan a lot. “Chris [Nolan, director] already had great faith in Harry‘s acting abilities and that’s why he gave him a role in the first place, but he’s surprised everyone with how natural a performer he is. He really commits to the part,” the source said. “It just made sense to increase his screen time. He’s a natural in front of the camera and of course having one of the biggest pop stars in the world attached to the project is a huge plus. Originally Harry was given just a little dialogue but the kid’s a natural and Chris rewarded him with more.”
