The Indian government of Narendra Modi has been reported to be seeking assistance from Bollywood’s most prominent stars to promote Urdu language in the country.
According to a report published in The Print, the autonomous body of National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) is intensifying its efforts of uplifting the Urdu language amongst the public by bringing in Bollywood stalwarts like Katrina Kaif, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan.
Director of the body, Aquil Ahmed stated: “The council has been tasked with the job of promoting Urdu as a language but all that we have been doing so far is producing literature in the language. We want to now focus more on promoting the language and not just the literature.”
He went on to add how the Bollywood luminaries will also be approached for the promotion of the language: “We are going to approach Bollywood actors, prominent names like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan and make them say a few lines in Urdu, we will then use these videos in our events.”
“Right now, only lyricist Javed Akhtar and actor Shabana Azmi are coming forward in support of the language from the film fraternity. We want more to join in,” he stated further.
