Muslim beauty queen could be first hijab-wearing Miss England
A British Muslim woman is about to make history to become first Hijab- wearing Miss England.
Daughter of a taxi driver , 20 years old Maria Mahmood says she has received immense support from her friends and family and the Muslim community at large; however she is also expecting a certain amount of criticism from ‘old-timers.’
"When I came runner-up, they were delighted for me. I’ve got three brothers and they’ve also been so good. Most people have been supportive. There have been a few negative comments and I’m fully expecting some criticism from old-timers and conservatives. But what I’m doing is empowering for Muslim women. I’m anticipating most people will back me," she stated.
This is not the first time a Muslim has partaken in the contest, as the title of Miss England has previously been grabbed by one as well. This will, however, be the first time a Muslim contestant in the race will be seen donned in a hijab around her head.
