Baby elephant rescued from well in Thailand

In a touching video sprouting on the web, a baby elephant can be seen getting rescued from a well in Thailand in the early hours of Friday.

The one-year-old calf had lost his way with a herd of elephants into a rubber plantation in Chanthaburi province, and ended up stumbling into the three-meter deep well.

While the rescue mission was still ongoing, the agitated and tensed mother of calf had lurched into an electric fence while in search of her offspring. Villagers who were awakened by the commotion immediately cut out the power to save the mother elephant who, in spite of receiving a few injuries, recovered soon after.

After the mother elephant was moved away by forest rangers, a backhoe had been called to create a sloped escape out of the well which brought the calf out and reunited him with his mother. The pair soon scuttled back into the forest and rejoined the herd of elephant they had left behind.

The footage released by Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, showing the reunion of the pair and the cheers of the rescuers stirred the emotions of social media users around the world and racked up thousands of views online.
