Director reportedly lined up for new 'Star Wars' movie

Jon Watts, the director behind Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy, is reportedly in line to direct the next Star Wars film. 

The 45-year-old is said to be attached to a new movie based on a script by Simon Kinberg, per Variety. 

While Knight Edge Media was the one who broke the story, The Hollywood Reporter discovered that the film would be the first in a planned trilogy written by Kinberg. Nothing has been officially confirmed.

It is also worth noting that the upcoming film wouldn't be Watts' first trip to a galaxy far, far away as he co-created the Disney+ series Skeleton Crew, but this would be his first Star Wars movie and a return to big-screen franchise filmmaking.

Watts already has Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home to his credits, which turned Holland's Peter Parker into one of the defining superheroes of his generation. 

But Watts didn't return for the latest film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Before Marvel, he made the films Clown and Cop Car.

If the reports are true, Watts will join an exclusive group of Star Wars directors, including George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand, J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson.
