Trump says Canada is ‘destroying itself’ with its immigration policies and ‘unemployment’

US President Donald Trump has criticised Canada’s immigration policies, claiming the country is “destroying itself” by allowing millions of people to enter.

In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday morning, Trump wrote: “Canada is destroying itself by allowing millions and millions of people into the Country,”

He claimed people were entering Canada “essentially unchecked and unvetted” and were “causing problems that will soon be too big to handle.”

“It is a Liberal takeover that will end very badly. Already showing up in their numbers. Big unemployment. ‘Oh Canada! President DJT,” he added.

Trump did not provide evidence for his claims about unchecked immigration. Canada’s unemployment rate was 6.4 percent in August, unchanged from July and down from 7.1 percent in September 2025, according to Statistics Canada.

The comments come as Prime Minister Mark Carney remains in New York for meetings surrounding the United Nations General Assembly.

Carney is scheduled to join European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday at a pledging event for an ocean observation system.
