Apple iPhone 18 Pro vs 17 Pro: Which one to buy

Apple wants $100 more for the iPhone 18 Pro than it charged for the 17 Pro at launch, and whether that gap makes sense depends entirely on what you actually do with your phone.

The 256GB iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1199, against $1099 for the equivalent iPhone 17 Pro. Before any bank offer or exchange discount, that's a straight 22% premium for one generation.

Both devices have the same fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture in their camera. Instead, the 18 Pro has the variable aperture that goes from ƒ/1.48 up to ƒ/4.0. It allows you to have the control over the amount of light that reaches the sensor without having it managed only by the software.

All other specs related to the camera are the same: the same 48 MP in the camera cluster (main, ultrawide and telephoto) and the same 4x optical and 8x optical quality zoom.

For photographers, the ability to control aperture manually will be the only thing worth paying attention to.

Apple's A20 Pro replaces the A19 Pro, adding a 7-core GPU and stronger neural acceleration for AI tasks. Third-party benchmarks put the gains at roughly 20% on CPU work and 40% on GPU work.

That gap will register in heavy gaming, video editing, and AI-driven features. It won't register while you're texting or scrolling; the two chips feel nearly identical for ordinary use.

The video playback time moves up from 33 hours to 36 hours, which is an increase, but nothing significant enough on its own to justify upgrading. The display hasn’t seen any changes at all; it’s still the 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with the ProMotion, and the same reduced Dynamic Island from the 17 Pro.

If you need extra functionality with your camera, improved AI, or the additional 2TB storage space, then this upgrade will be justified by your requirements, but if the 17 Pro suits your needs well enough, this $100 won’t buy you much.
